The MikroTik Chateau 5G R17 ax is the 5G router that refuses to compromise. On one side, it is a genuinely powerful RouterOS v7 platform — the same industrial-grade operating system used by ISPs and network engineers in millions of deployments worldwide, with full BGP, OSPF, VPN, firewall, VLAN, traffic shaping, SNMP, and scripting capability. On the other side, it is simple enough for a household to deploy in minutes with the MikroTik iOS/Android app. And now, with 5G Release 17 and built-in eSIM, it does not even require a SIM card to get online.
The 5G Release 17 modem is the headline upgrade. R17 introduces more advanced carrier aggregation combinations than previous 5G releases — combining more FDD and TDD bands simultaneously to extract higher downlink speeds and more consistent signal stability from the same tower, even at longer ranges. In practical terms, this means the Chateau 5G R17 ax will outperform earlier 5G routers on the same network, in the same location, particularly in areas where the cell tower is not close.
The eSIM implementation is genuinely flexible. The Chateau 5G R17 ax supports MikroTik Connectivity (MikroTik's own eSIM service), third-party eSIM providers, and multiple eSIM profiles stored simultaneously — switch between carriers without touching the device. The physical Micro SIM slot remains available alongside eSIM, providing full flexibility for deployments where a physical SIM is required or preferred.
The dual-band Wi-Fi 6 radio delivers 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz and 1,200 Mbps on 5 GHz — enough for high-density home and small office environments with multiple concurrent users on video calls, 4K streaming, and cloud workloads. Two external dual-chain Wi-Fi 6 antennas (3 dBi on 2.4 GHz, 6 dBi on 5 GHz) provide coverage across multi-floor home layouts and open-plan offices without dead zones.
The 1× 2.5G Ethernet port is the wired-side upgrade story. Where the standard GbE WAN/LAN ports handle typical broadband connections, the 2.5G port future-proofs the Chateau for multi-gigabit ISP services and high-speed NAS connections — a genuine differentiator at this price point.
