MikroTik RB960PGS hEX PoE 5-Port GbE 4x PoE-Out SFP USB Router

The MikroTik hEX PoE (RB960PGS) is a compact, affordable five-port Gigabit Ethernet router designed for locations where wireless connectivity is not required. Powered by an 800MHz QCA9557 MIPSBE CPU and 128MB of RAM, it handles all RouterOS L4 features including advanced routing, firewalling, and traffic management with ease. Four of its five Gigabit Ethernet ports (Ether2–5) deliver passive PoE or 802.3af/at PoE output at up to 1A per port, allowing it to power connected access points, IP cameras, or other PoE devices directly — eliminating the need for separate PoE injectors. An SFP port adds fibre uplink capability, while a USB 2.0 Type-A port (with power reset) supports modems, storage devices, or other USB peripherals. Passively cooled and built to operate from -40°C to +60°C.

The hEX PoE is built around the Qualcomm Atheros QCA9557 single-core MIPSBE CPU running at 800MHz, paired with 128MB of RAM and 16MB of FLASH storage for the RouterOS system. The QCA8337 switch chip handles Ethernet switching across the five Gigabit ports. Despite its compact size and modest price point, the 800MHz CPU is capable of handling the full range of RouterOS L4 features including advanced routing protocols, NAT, firewalling, queuing, and VPN configurations.

Gigabit Ethernet Ports with PoE Output

The hEX PoE features five 10/100/1000 Mbps shielded Gigabit Ethernet ports. Ports 2 through 5 support PoE output, passing through the same voltage applied to the unit in passive mode, or providing 802.3af/at standard PoE output for compatible devices. The per-port current limit is 1A at low voltage and 450mA at high voltage, with a maximum combined PoE-out of 2A across all active PoE ports. This makes it straightforward to power up to four PoE-capable devices — such as wireless access points or IP cameras — directly from the router without the need for additional PoE injectors or switches. Total maximum power consumption under full PoE load is 54W; the router itself draws only 6W without any attached PoE devices.

SFP Port

A single SFP port provides the option to add optical fibre connectivity, making the hEX PoE suitable for deployments where the router needs to uplink via fibre to a provider or a remote switch — useful in multi-building environments or where long-distance copper runs are not practical.

USB Port

A USB 2.0 Type-A port with USB Power Reset support adds versatility, allowing the connection of a 3G/4G USB modem for failover or primary WAN, a USB storage device for RouterOS file storage or logging, or other compatible USB peripherals. The port supports up to 1A of output current.

Powering Options

The hEX PoE accepts power via two inputs: a DC jack (12–57V) and passive PoE-in on Ether1 (12–57V), giving flexibility for powering from a standard adapter or from an upstream passive PoE injector or switch. A 24V 2.5A power adapter and an IEC cord are included in the box. Cooling is fully passive — completely fanless — making the unit silent in operation.

Monitoring

The hEX PoE includes a PCB temperature monitor, a voltage monitor, and a beeper, providing RouterOS-accessible health monitoring for the unit's operating conditions.

Software

The device runs RouterOS with a Level 4 licence, pre-installed and fully licenced with no additional purchase required. RouterOS L4 covers the full feature set needed for most small to medium business and remote office deployments, including BGP, OSPF, firewall, NAT, VPN, bandwidth management, and more.

Build and Suitability

The hEX PoE is built in a compact desktop plastic enclosure with an IP20 rating, suitable for standard indoor environments. Its tested operating temperature range of -40°C to +60°C and MTBF of approximately 100,000 hours at 25°C make it reliable for long-term deployment in office, retail, and equipment cabinet settings.

Use Cases

The hEX PoE is ideal for small office and remote branch deployments needing a capable wired router with integrated PoE, scenarios where wireless is handled by dedicated access points powered over the router's PoE ports, multi-building or campus setups requiring a fibre uplink via the SFP port, and installations where a small, silent, passively cooled router is preferred over a larger managed device.

General information

All students who attend the Training can receive a free L4 license from MikroTik. Training should be at least three days long.

Students are allowed to take the certification test ONLY upon the attendance of individual training course, in the class, under the supervision of a MikroTik Certified Training Partner.

Each certification test consists of a pre-defined % of random questions (multiple choice and true/false) from specific question categories. Items also have a difficulty parameter. MTCNA test is generated from more straightforward questions, Advanced tests – from more difficult questions.

Only one attempt is allowed. The test must be finished within one hour. The passing grade is set to 60%. There are 25 questions in the exam.

Certificate numbers and RouterOS L4 licenses are assigned automatically by MikroTik. Students can see their certificates and generate license keys once logged into the account server. Printed documents from MikroTik cost USD 30 per piece. Shipping is not included.

Remote training sessions and certification exams are not allowed.

MikroTik Certification Test without prior attendance of particular MikroTik Training Session is not allowed.
